Welcome to Luckenbooth Yarns!!

Picture

We are a retail and mail order yarn store located at 270 George St, Sydney, NS, across the street from the Cape Breton Post and School Board office. Luckenbooth Yarns is owned and operated by Paula MacDonald and David Marsh, both long time residents of Sydney. We opened our store in February 2011 and are enjoying meeting lots of fiber artists including knitters, crocheters and rug hookers.

Our name, Luckenbooth Yarns is derived from the Scottish symbol, the Luckenbooth which can be seen above. It's history is two stylized M's that are intertwined as hearts signifying love and the crown representing loyalty. The Luckenbooth brooch was so called because it was sold from the "locked booths" on the Royal Mile adjacent to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland,in the early 1700s. Traditionally, it was exchanged between lovers on betrothal. The intertwining hearts of the brooch and the sometimes inscribed phases such as "of earthly joys thou art my chioce" are evidence of its purpose. The Luckenbooth was then given to the first born on their birth.  Mary Queen of Scots gave one to her betrothed which also contained a thistle and her monogram. Since we are partners, in business and in life,  both of our last names begin with "M" and are of U.K. heritage, we felt this was a very appropriate symbol for our business.

Luckenbooth Yarns is located on Cape Breton Island which is also known for its Celtic culture. You will find the Gaelic College, road signs in Gaelic, Celtic Colors music festival and other Celtic influences on Cape Breton Island.

Did you know... The first knitting machine was invented by William Lee in 1558.
He was so jealous of his lady spending too much time knitting that he invented a machine to do the job instead, leaving her free to cater for him.
Luckenbooth Yarns caters to Hand knitters...............
